Among Sawadaya's seasonal sweets, the one that receives the most inquiries all year round is the autumn sweet "Kuridama." After undergoing a major renewal last year, the highly popular Kuritama will be available again this year for a limited time and in limited quantities from September 1, 2024.
Every year, they start by asking "Should we change it from last year or not?" and then discuss it deeply from various angles. In the fall of 2023, they took a major turn by adding brandy, and after much trial and error, they have completed a Kuritama that they can deliver with confidence. As a result, it has been so well received that many people ask, "When will it start this year?" and "I missed it last year, so this year will be it."
Meanwhile, this year we have started selling the same flavor of Kuritama as last year!
The chestnut paste is made without adding white bean paste, using 100% domestic Japanese chestnuts as a smooth paste, and chestnuts with their skins, which retain their irregular, chunky texture. The chestnuts are not chopped, but are added whole, so they naturally crumble as they are kneaded with the paste. Because they are handmade one by one, the shape and amount of chestnuts added varies from one to another, which is what makes them so lovable, and gives you the warmth that is unique to Sawadaya's Tamagashi.
The roasted green tea yokan used to wrap the bean paste was selected by a tea master from Hokodo, a long-established Kyoto tea shop. The roasted green tea aroma and gentle sweetness further enhance the deliciousness of the chestnut paste.
And the secret to the rich flavor of this Kuritama is the brandy "La Frueste" made from 100% Koshu grapes by Kiyama Liquor in Enzan City. Public relations officer Reina Kurosawa says that it was really difficult to get the balance right with this brandy, as it would be boring if it wasn't fragrant, but it also couldn't be too fragrant.
Koshu wine is distilled in-house in copper Charentais pots and the brandy is aged in barrels for over 20 years, adding Western elements to the Japanese chestnut balls and evolving them.
Sawadaya's seasonal sweets are upgraded every year to make each new season even more special.
Enjoying the long autumn nights under the beautiful moon with chestnut balls...
